What makes you wake up in the morning?
Is it the excitement to eat that piece of sandwich you have mastered to make?
Or the excitement to drink that cup of coffee you have mastered to brew?
Is it the possibility to learn something new from a teacher overseas?
Each day is pregnant with possibilities…
We all get out of bed in the morning simply because it is another day to be ALIVE!
Our mission is to deeply understand an extremely broad topic called motivation.
Motivation, as described on Pathways, is a primary skill every leader should have…
MOTIVATION is a force that inspires HUMANS to grow and to progress.
Hence, the MOTIVATIONAL LEADER is a force that pushes the human race forward. This project had been a great challenge since I had to take a solo journey through the Motivational Strategies path. But I enjoyed my freedom and autonomy as always—with support of course.
So what motivates humans?
What makes us wake up every single morning?
What keeps us ALIVE?
What keeps us celebrating our BIRTHDAYS each year?
When a lot of other people have chosen the easy-way-around… to force themselves to sleep forever—if you know what I mean…
To search for answers, I listened to podcasts, watched TED talks, documentaries, educational speeches at the Toastmasters 2020 Virtual Convention, read a lot of books, deleted my Facebook account, broke up with my boyfriends (笑) so that I will have the time to listen to many people–including myself.
Motivation according to a Toastmaster named Bob Mason, who studied motivation for 40 years, said that motivation and needs coexist. Hence, in order to deeply understand motivation, we need to understand our needs.
An American psychologist named Abraham Maslow wrote a paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation” in 1943—a very long time ago. A time when the WWII was reaching its climax. A time when psychologists might have felt the need to step up and reach out to others because we all know that in times of crisis, people need love and support more than ever...
Just like TODAY…
I want to believe that this man (Mr. Maslow) tried to seek enlightenment in the midst of all the worldly confusion and chaos. And so his theory remains relevant until today for he thought that fulfilling the innate needs of human beings is TOP PRIORITY.
So what are HUMAN needs?
They fall into three main categories…
- Physiological- a healthy and safe environment. They are very basic. They all have to be certain. Or else humans will panic or be threatened!
- Psychological- a strong sense of self… ready to take challenges, ready to face the world of uncertainties… to go out for the hunt! To seize opportunities in order to grow and reach one’s full potential.
- Psychosocial- a sense of belongingness, to be part of a community, to feel accepted and valued… To feel significant, to feel important… And this is why humans have friends, family, husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, cats and dogs… smartphones, social media accounts, Toastmasters International membership…
We need ALL of them for “We are hardwired for CONNECTION.”(Brene Brown, 2011)
So fellow members and guests…
We have a looooong list of needs—just to keep us alive and motivated.
So…what kind of leader does our world NEED?
Is it the kind that would inspire humans to grow and to progress whose FORCE pushes the human race forward?
Is it the kind who would abundantly provide our needs?
Is it the kind who would lift us all up and give us strong wings to fly?
Is it the kind who will not give up on rising every single day just to keep us warm and guided as we walk along our paths?
